How to read the swell.

Swell is the language of the ocean. Once you understand height, period, and direction, the forecast starts to make sense.

What is swell?

Swell is ocean energy traveling across the sea. It is usually generated by storms far away from the coast. By the time it reaches your beach, it may have traveled hundreds or even thousands of miles.

The three numbers that matter

Swell height

How much energy is moving through the water. Bigger is not always better.

Swell period

The time between waves. Longer period often means more powerful and organized surf.

Swell direction

Where the swell is coming from. Direction decides which beaches and points receive the energy.

Example

A forecast that says 3 ft @ 17s from SW does not mean the same thing as 3 ft @ 8s from W.

3 ft @ 8s

Shorter period. Less organized. Usually weaker.

3 ft @ 17s

Longer period. More energy. Better potential.

How SwellOracle helps

SwellOracle watches buoy data and surf conditions so you can understand when the ocean is starting to change.

Practical takeaway

Height, period and direction are the first three signals to read before you decide where and when to paddle out.
