SwellOracle is created by PhD. Jorge Cornejo, a marine biologist who brings scientific training and a surfer's practical curiosity to the way ocean data is explained.
Marine science and the ocean
Jorge completed his doctorate in Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). That training informs how SwellOracle presents uncertainty, source identity, timestamps and the distinction between observed conditions and model estimates.
Scientific training does not make any single buoy value a guaranteed surf report. The aim is to make public ocean data clearer and more traceable, while keeping the limits of each source visible.
Learning to surf at UCSB
Jorge learned to surf while at UCSB and became interested in the simple, repeated question that surfers ask before a session: what is the ocean doing, and what does that offshore signal mean at my local break?
That connection between scientific context and a practical surf routine is central to SwellOracle. The platform helps users inspect the source and time of a reading, then bring in period, direction, wind, tide, coastline exposure and local observation.
Editorial responsibility
Jorge creates and reviews SwellOracle's educational and editorial content. The work focuses on explaining data faithfully: physical buoy observations remain attributable to their providers, marine models stay clearly labelled as estimates, and unavailable data is not replaced with invented continuity.
SwellOracle is informational. It does not replace official marine warnings, local regulations, visible conditions, local knowledge or a surfer's own judgement.
How the content is reviewed
Before an educational page is published, Jorge checks that the source type is identified, timestamps and missing fields are explained, and observations are not presented as beach guarantees. The review also looks for practical context: wind, tide, coastline exposure, data freshness and official safety information.
This process separates scientific interpretation from product promotion. The goal is to help surfers ask better questions of ocean data, including when the correct answer is that a reading is incomplete, stale or not representative of their beach.
